Prof. Dr. Muhammad Tanvir Afzal
Programme Leader – Computing Cluster
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Tanvir Afzal is the Programme Leader for the Computing Cluster at Gisma University of Applied Sciences. He is an accomplished academic, researcher, and executive trainer with over 20 years of experience in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and higher education leadership.
He holds a PhD with the highest distinction from Graz University of Technology, Austria, and an MSc in Computer Science with a Gold Medal from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. Throughout his career, he has held several senior leadership positions, including Founding Dean of Computing, Founding Director of Campus, Director of Quality Enhancement, and Director of Information Systems. He has successfully led academic innovation, institutional development, and digital transformation initiatives.
Prof. Afzal has taught across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes for more than two decades and has an outstanding record of student engagement and academic excellence. His research has earned international recognition, with over 150 publications, more than 2,500 citations, an H-index of 29, and an i10-index of 77. His work spans artificial intelligence, data science, software engineering, and information systems and has been published in leading international journals and conferences. He has also supervised over 140 research students across PhD, Master’s, and undergraduate levels.
In addition to his academic achievements, Prof. Afzal has delivered executive training for senior leaders across multiple industries in areas including digital transformation, data analytics, and AI-driven decision-making. At Gisma, he is committed to developing future-ready computing professionals through research-led, industry-focused education that equips graduates to excel in a rapidly evolving digital world.
