Our team

Prof. Dr. Mahmoudreza Babaei is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence at Gisma University of Applied Sciences and Research Director of the BRAINS Research Center. He teaches across the Artificial Intelligence, Data Engineering, and Computer Science programmes and serves as Programme Director for Data Science, AI, and Digital Business.

His research focuses on machine learning, reinforcement learning, graph neural networks, fairness in AI, and large language models, with particular emphasis on how algorithmic systems influence information access and decision-making at scale.

Before joining Gisma, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Humans & Machines, Max Planck Institute for Human Development, where he worked with Prof. Iyad Rahwan, and at the Department of Communication, UCLA. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems (MPI-SWS), conducting research in the Social Computing Research Group under the supervision of Prof. Krishna P. Gummadi.

He has held visiting research positions at the University of Cambridge, KAIST, and RMIT University, and will serve as a Visiting Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy (MPI-SP) from September to December 2026.

His work has been published in leading international conferences and journals, including ACM WSDM, AAAI, IJCAI, ICWSM, AAAI/ACM AIES, ACM FAccT, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, and IEEE Transactions on Computational Social Systems.
