The MSc Financial Risk Management has been designed to provide students with a comprehensive, globally focused understanding of the risk management tools, ranging from enterprise-wide risk management practices to specific techniques and requirements in the financial industry sector.

You will gain a fundamental understanding of financial products including equities, bonds, derivatives and investment funds. It also examines types of risks faced by businesses and risk management practices within financial institutions, namely market, credit and counterparty risks.

This Masters degree is ideal for those seeking a career in risk management, compliance, audit and treasury functions of financial institutions and corporates. Whether you are looking to progress in your current career, switch careers or pursue a career in this field, this is the course for you. How will you learn?

This course is delivered interactively with a real-world focus. Learning will take place both in and outside the classroom environment. Face-to-face learning is supported by online resources, including the Financial Times, case studies, simulations, learning videos, reading materials, online testing and feedback.

The programme consists of three workshop contact hours each week per 30 credit module to promote group interaction, as well as personal support to individuals.

Modules overview

Students will study for one year, which is divided into two semesters and the summer period for the dissertation. Students will study four modules, each worth 30 credits; and another module worth 60 credits, totalling 180 credits.

By the end of the course, students will have acquired the necessary skills to become key players in the roles of corporate global risk management, global audit and compliance coordination, corporate social responsibility and ethics management, security and compliance management in all types of financial institutions.

This year will consist of the following core modules:

  • Fundamentals of Securities and Investments
  • Derivatives and Risk Hedging
  • Risk Simulation and Basel III Capital Requirements
  • Automation Regulations, Compliance: concepts and automation, Fintech and Regtech


  • Research Methods, Professional Development and Dissertation/Project


Students will be assessed in a range of different methods to determine the module outcomes. Formative assessment will include preparation and feedback from seminars, workshops, tests and preparations. Summative assessment, which also contributes to the grade, includes individual and group assignments, projects and exams.

Career direction

Upon completion of this course, students will have the necessary skills and knowledge for switching to or progressing within a career in risk management, compliance, audit and treasury functions of financial institutions and corporates.

Additionally, students who graduate from this degree may consider pursuing further studies with Chartered Management Institute’s (CMI) professional qualifications, a PhD or MBA.

Flexible payment plan

GISMA offers flexible payment plans that allow you to spread the costs of your programme fees across three instalments. A deposit of €2,000 is required to start:

  • 1st instalment - €5,333
  • 2nd instalment - €5,333
  • 3rd instalment - €3,334

Students will be eligible for a discount of 0.5% off the total fee if the payment of the entire tuition fee is completed before the first instalment due date.

Please note that all payment plans are suggested only. A specific payment plan for you can be agreed with GISMA and only the deposit is the fixed amount that is required. Students can spread out the payments as they like, as long as this is in line with the payment date deadlines.

Entry requirements

  • A 2:2 or above from a UK Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent qualifications.
  • International requirements - an English Language level equivalent to IELTS 6.5 or above with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.
  • Non-standard entry: non-standard applicants are welcome to apply at GISMA. Applicants without a bachelor's degree may apply if they possess at least 5 years' managerial experience.
